And the flat-out weirdest movie ever made is…

June 20, 2011

ERASERHEAD!

Still haven’t seen this, I don’t know what’s taking me, but from what I’ve heard it sounds like a deserving winner. Seems like this poll belonged to David Lynch, and as someone who actually paid to see all three hours of Inland Empire in theaters, that ain’t much of a surprise.

Good voting, folks. Y’all are some weirdos.

RESULTS:
Eraserhead: 24 votes
Mulholland Dr.: 16 votes
Naked Lunch: 14 votes (probably would have been my vote, definitely didn’t take enough LSD before I saw that)
Donnie Darko: 14 votes
The Fountain: 12 votes
2001: 9 votes
Pi: 7 votes
Altered States: 2 votes (might have been my runner-up)
– Other: (there were a freakin’ TON of write-ins last week, a lot of which I’ve never even heard of, so just gonna list ’em like so)
Visitor of a Musuem: 1 vote
Mr. Nobody: 1 vote
The Village: 1 vote
Son of the Mask: 1 vote (how that movie ever got released may be the most flat-out weirdest thing about this whole poll)
Blue Velvet: 1 vote
Kaboom: 1 vote (yeah, that looked really weird)
Event Horizon: 1 vote
Liquid Sky: 1 vote
Inland Empire: 1 vote (you know what I’m talkin’ about)
Enter the Void: 1 vote (very weird)
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: 1 vote (well played)
Primer: 1 vote (oh yeah)
The Cremaster Cycle: 1 vote
Zeroes: 1 vote (love it)

For my money, none of these out-weirds Naked Lunch on any level, but then again– I haven’t seen Eraserhead. (Really.)

Maybe I’ll watch them both back to back and write about it if my brain doesn’t break.

Dude, you and I are on the same exact level. Altered States is second place for me, but Naked Lunch was on a whole ‘nother level (probably should have read the book beforehand). Will see Eraserhead one of these days though.

Eraserhead is a weird film, but if you want to see something REALLY weird, check out Un Chien Andalou, directed by Luis Bunuel, who co-wrote the film with Savaldor Dali. It isn’t a feature film (it’s only around 16 minutes long) but it is the weirdest film I’ve watched so far. There really isn’t any temporal consistency or anything to orient yourself with. I can’t even describe it properly.

Is that the one where he cuts the chick’s eye open?

Yeah. I mean, you’re supposed to think they’re cutting the woman’s eye. If you actually look at the skin surrounding the eye, though, it looks furry. I think I read somewhere that it was a cow’s eye. That actually wasn’t the weirdest part of the film, though I can see why it was one of the more controversial bits.

Geel louise. That Bunuel was a weird guy, but I have heard good things about The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Then again, Belle du Jour was beyond strange. Gonna have to psyche myself up for this one when I finally get around to it.

About 5 years ago I bought an Eraserhead t-shirt at a record store in the East Village (NYC). I had no idea what it was, but i get comments from people whenever I wear it. I’ve had the movie in my Netflix queue for a year but I haven’t seen it yet either. I have to check it out soon.

Haha. Yeah, I’m sure that would draw some attention. About time I checked it out as well. Let me know when you finally get around to it and thanks for stopping by!

It’s hard to argue with Eraserhead. I just watched it for the first time a couple months ago and it was a mindfuck, to say the least. It was my first Lynch movie, too… curious to see how the rest of his filmography compares.

I actually voted for Enter the Void, although I think that was more because it was fresh in my mind. Man, what a trip that movie was.

Holy crap, what a place to start for your first Lynch movie. Thank my lucky stars I started with The Elephant Man.

And can’t knock Enter the Void, that was some out there shit.

i will never forget that baby.

Only seen screen grabs of it, but yeah, that thing is gross. Apparently is a cow fetus or something. Good times!
