Cowboys & Aliens (2011)

July 27, 2011

4/10 Wild Wild Wests

Part Western, part alien invasion, all disappointment.

Really wanted this to be awesome, really wanted it to prove everyone wrong who laughed out loud at the title when I first saw the trailer at Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, but alas, this is what happens when you get five writers together to overcomplicate a good thing. Really could have been the bomb.

Well, whatcha gonna do? Hit the jump to see the full report on this cliche-ridden bastard.

Good review as always, now i’m questioning seeing this at midnight. But quick question, does moviefone get you to early screenings?

    • July 27, 2011 2:11 pm

Hell yes they do. Definitely one of the finer perks. And I’d say avoid the midnight screening, or a screening in general. Go see Attack the Block if you can.

Damn you. That’s a very nice set-up ya got there. Gotcha, I may go with friends for $5 for the fuck of it. And I really wanna see Attack the Block!

Haha. Well $5 ain’t so bad at all. That could buy you 30 minutes of a movie in NY!

Haha. Still got us beat by a dollar.

Oh no, had high hopes for this one!

I know, so did I. Such a disappointment, had so much potential to be awesome.

I didn’t think it was that bad (though the person who wrote the review on our site did):

For me, I just wanted cool entertainment with awesome moments from Craig and Ford, and that’s what I got. Especially from Craig, he did great with what was given to him, along with the accent. The aliens were typical, but that doesn’t make them bad. Overall, it’s not an Oscar movie, but it was still a fun ride during those two hours.

Nice review, good man! I trust your judgement on this one and won’t shell out the moolah. I really wanted this to do well. Story and writing always reign supreme. I’m not a huge Jon Favreau fan but did enjoy Iron Man. I’ve enjoyed Daniel Craig since Layer Cake and Road to Perdition. He’s kinda got that ugly/handsome smooth/rugged thing going a la Harvey Keitel and that can’t ever be bad. Hard to not like Indiana Solo either. I’d love to see Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis in a face-off. Think wincing, side-mouthed Richard Kimble/Jack Ryan/Witness Cop vs. pursed lips, wide-eyed, glass-in-feet John McClane. The winner could go against Mel Gibson’s Sgt. Riggs but I digress. Do you think this film will be indicative of the genre mashing to come? I’m a bit mixed about it but certainly open.

Happy to see you’re following your passion, laddy. Proud of you!

Mark! Thanks, man! Glad I could help in steering you clear of this mess, you ain’t missing anything. Really did have all the ingredients to make something totally awesome for all the reasons you said, but alas, none of them came through mostly because they had a garbage script to work with. Hopefully this isn’t the trend that genre-bending will be taking in the future, hopefully it starts taking notes from movies like Attack the Block and Bellflower. But whatever, if you’ve got a good script and a good story, you can make anything work.

Thanks for the comment, man. Will stay in touch and you do the same!

It is indeed all about the story and screenplay. A movie can be perfect in all other areas, cast, director, cinematography, music, etc but if it ain’t got those two it can’t ever be good.

I sucked at keeping in touch but will work at it. lol. Take note of my new email address.

On a totally unrelated note, I think we should create cast of the best character actors ever preferably ones whose names we don’t know. Think of the bald guy with the mustache from Cliffhanger and Patriot Games. Total badass. There are tons more.

        Amen, brotha’.

And I’m right there with ya’. Never been my strong suit.

We’re actually thinking about starting an on-running feature like that over at Moviefone where we interview Those Guys about what it’s like being Those Guys.

And that guy with the mustache from Cliffhanger is such a badass.
